| Helpful hints
to enable you to adjust to life with your new family |
| |
Some helpful advice for you before you begin your
time as an au pair.
|
| |
 |
NEVER LEAVE
THE CHILDREN UNATTENDED WHEN YOU ARE IN CHARGE. |
| |
 |
NEVER SMACK
THE CHILDREN – you must find out from the parents
how you should discipline the children if it is necessary. |
| |
 |
Make sure
that you sit down with the family as soon as possible
to organise your routine - It is far easier to settle
in once you have a good routine organised. Ideally
you should be given a work schedule at least a week
in advance but please try to be flexible. |
| |
 |
Try to integrate
yourself into family life – joining in with
family activities will make the work more enjoyable. |
| |
 |
Most English
families have their main meal in the evening. You
may find this a culture change because you are probably
used to eating your main meal at lunchtime. Try to
adjust to this change and join the family at meal
times because it is a good opportunity for conversation
and to improve your English. |
| |
 |
Remember
that you are a guest in the house and that you must
ask permission to use the telephone and to have visitors.
There may also be some other house rules but you need
to check with the family. Also – as a guest,
be prepared to help at meal times even though you
may not be working. It is courteous for a guest to
help clear the table and help with the washing up
etc at meal times. |
| |
 |
Language
studies – you should be attending a part time
course at your local college and you need to make
sure that you select a course that fits in with your
family routine. |

| Non
EEA Nationals who have an Au Pair visa |
| If you
are here as an Au Pair then you are not allowed
to undertake taxable employment. Your visa does
not allow it. |
| Working
in the UK – EEA Nationals |
| Quote
from immigration and Nationality directorate May
2004 |
| ‘Those
au pairs already in the UK who wish to continue
current placements without changing their working
arrangements do not need to register, providing
they do not take up additional employment. However,
should they choose to alter their au pair arrangement
and enter into a more formal employment arrangement
with the host family, e.g. by increasing their
hours, duties or pay, then they will need to register
under the scheme. If they choose to take work
in addition to their au pair placement they should
obtain a registration certificate for both the
au pair placement and for the additional work.
Further information about how to register and
application forms are available at www.workingintheuk.gov.uk.’ |
