Why use an agency rather than find a family yourself?

WE HELP TO ENSURE YOUR SAFETY WHILE YOU ARE IN ENGLAND BY INTRODUCING YOU TO FAMILIES WHO ARE KNOWN TO US.

Our service is FREE OF CHARGE TO YOU.

We look after you while you are in the UK.

We are here to help you if you have any problems.

We provide you with a network of friends.

We organise social activities during the year so that you can meet other Au Pairs.

What is an Au Pair?

An au pair is a single person between the ages of 17 and 27 without any dependants.

An Au Pair coming to England will do so to learn English by living as part of an English speaking family.

Au Pairs live as part of a family and have their own bedroom and full board and lodging.

An Au Pair is not considered as domestic staff but is expected to help in the house for up to 25 hours in exchange for pocket money and keep (minimum £60 per week).

Au Pairs are expected to do light housework and take care of children.

An Au Pair has 2 free days per week and can attend part time language classes and Religious services if desired.

MANY OF OUR FAMILIES GIVE GOOD LEVELS OF POCKET MONEY AND MANY WILL PROVIDE A CAR FOR YOU TO DRIVE IF YOU ARE A GOOD AND SAFE DRIVER.

We can help you to find a nice family in England, but first weneed you to complete and return our Au Pair Registration Document. We will also need you to supply us with the following additional information.

The references need to include the name and telephone number of the author so that we can contact them to verify the references.

A ‘Dear Family Letter’ which introduces you to a prospective family. Please include information about your home, your family and your childcare experience and your hobbies etc. If you are a driver you should also include information about your current driving experience

Helpful hints to enable you to adjust to life with your new family

Some helpful advice for you before you begin your time as an au pair.

NEVER LEAVE THE CHILDREN UNATTENDED WHEN YOU ARE IN CHARGE.

NEVER SMACK THE CHILDREN – you must find out from the parents how you should discipline the children if it is necessary.

Make sure that you sit down with the family as soon as possible to organise your routine - It is far easier to settle in once you have a good routine organised. Ideally you should be given a work schedule at least a week in advance but please try to be flexible.

Try to integrate yourself into family life – joining in with family activities will make the work more enjoyable.

Most English families have their main meal in the evening. You may find this a culture change because you are probably used to eating your main meal at lunchtime. Try to adjust to this change and join the family at meal times because it is a good opportunity for conversation and to improve your English.

Remember that you are a guest in the house and that you must ask permission to use the telephone and to have visitors. There may also be some other house rules but you need to check with the family. Also – as a guest, be prepared to help at meal times even though you may not be working. It is courteous for a guest to help clear the table and help with the washing up etc at meal times.

Language studies – you should be attending a part time course at your local college and you need to make sure that you select a course that fits in with your family routine.

Working in the UK
Non EEA Nationals who have an Au Pair visa
If you are here as an Au Pair then you are not allowed to undertake taxable employment. Your visa does not allow it.
Working in the UK – EEA Nationals
Quote from immigration and Nationality directorate May 2004
‘Those au pairs already in the UK who wish to continue current placements without changing their working arrangements do not need to register, providing they do not take up additional employment. However, should they choose to alter their au pair arrangement and enter into a more formal employment arrangement with the host family, e.g. by increasing their hours, duties or pay, then they will need to register under the scheme. If they choose to take work in addition to their au pair placement they should obtain a registration certificate for both the au pair placement and for the additional work. Further information about how to register and application forms are available at www.workingintheuk.gov.uk.’
